Getting to San Juan del Sur

Map Liberia

By Plane

Since the pandemic, few airlines are flying in and out of Managua, so you may consider flying into Liberia, Costa Rica and taking a bus to the Nicaraguan border, then a taxi to San Juan, which will run between $25 and $50.

If you do fly into Managua, a secure taxi from the airport directly to San Juan del Sur costs $100, but it may be worth it for the convenience.

By Bus

Most travelers arrive in San Juan del Sur by bus, as a direct bus leaves Rivas roughly every half hour.   It’s about a 45 min ride to San Juan from Rivas and about 2-3 hrs from Granada.

From Leon, you can get a shuttle directly to San Juan del Sur, and it will run you roughly $25.   Alternatively, you can hop on a minibus in Leon to Managua, catch a taxi to Mercado Huembes, get on a bus to Rivas, and then finally catch a bus to San Juan del Sur.   That option will likely only run you around $11 USD, though it’s much less direct and takes a lot longer.

Taxis are available near the municipal market of San Juan del Sur, and will take you directly to Suelo Sano or Hostel Lomas for $20.

You can also make the trip by public transport, this can take longer, due to the constant stops.   You must go to the municipal market of San Juan del Sur and from there take a bus bound for "El Ostional".  There are a limited number, starting at 7am, then 8am, and then around Noon.  The schedule is variable, so be prepared to wait.

Once on the bus, tell the driver or cobrador you're getting off at Escamequita.  From Escamequita it is a 20 minute walk to Las Parceles, where Centro Suelo Sano and Hostel Lomas del Bosque are located.

If you are attending a Workshop, it is likely that shuttles will be available at Surftown Hostel, in San Juan del Sur.
